At the very least, you should see to your HVAC’s condition on a monthly basis. This includes inspecting and cleaning or changing the air filters and checking the thermostat settings — doing so helps keep the system functional and efficient for a long time. As a responsible homeowner, you should also make it a point to read the owner’s manual, and schedule a professional inspection and tune-up at least twice a year.
On his regular maintenance visit, your professional HVAC guy should check and tighten all electrical connections, lubricate all moving parts, inspect the condensate drain, the controls of the system, the refrigerant level and gas (or oil) connections, clean the evaporator and condenser coils, and adjust the blower components.
